Far worse things

The coalmine canary no longer sings
for there are far worse things
than toxic gas
in deep dark mines.
She refuses to grace this tainted air
with her carefully recited notes.
Although it tastes sweet on the miners' lips
it slips into his veins
and makes its way to his brain
where it corrupts his mind
with wicked thoughts
far worse than any sane man could ever known.
